What is the course about?

The Diploma is a new qualification that is a mix of class work and hands on experience that prepares young people for further study at school or college, a job, university, or an Apprenticeship.

Where will I study?

At the Alfreton Vocational Academy and at South East Derbyshire College (Ilkeston).

Employability:

• The global environment in which hair and beauty businesses operate, plus personal presentation, hygiene and wellbeing.
• The principles of basic hair, beauty and nail treatments and routines – along with historic and cultural differences.

Customer interaction:

• Communication skills from client consultation to managing expectations, as well as promotion and selling by recommendation.
  
• Introduces basic business systems and processes in a salon reception.

Creativity and innovation:

• Investigate how personality, culture, race, gender, fashion and religious influences can be expressed through hairstyles, skin care and make-up techniques.
  
• The importance of innovation in hair and beauty product design.

The Diploma covers all 6 industries - Hairdressing, Beauty, Nails, Barbering, African type hair and Spa.

How will it be taught?

There will be practical demonstrations and activities in the salon with theory lessons in a dedicated classroom, collation of portfolio evidence and on-line tests throughout the programme.

How will I be assessed?

The units are assessed through practical assignments and a portfolio of evidence. A qualified assessor will observe and question you about the work you have done to test your knowledge and understanding as well as observing your actual performance.

What can I do when I have completed the course?

Depending on your achievement you can:

• Progress to an appropriate level 2 qualification at a local college
• Progress to a post 16 Apprenticeship with a local training provider
• Go into 6th form
